My Early Days in Myrtle Beach Golf

When I first came to Myrtle  Beach there were basically just a few golf courses - certainly not the hundred that there are today. There were The Dunes Club, Pine Lakes, The Surf Club, Skyway (now Waterway Hills), Arcadian Shores, Myrtlewood, Myrtle Beach National, Azalea Sands, Beachwood, Cypress Bay, Possum Trot, Eagle Nest, Litchfield, Quail Creek, Carolina Shores, Sea Trail, and Indian Wells. There were also some courses that no longer exist: Bay Tree, Gator Hole, Robbers Roost, Raccoon Run, Marsh Harbour, and Sea Gull, which has been renovated into the Founders Club.

One of the big developers of Myrtle Beach golf was Larry Young. He changed the course of Myrtle Beach’s golf scene by building such gems as Marsh Harbour, Oyster Bay, Heritage Club, and the Legends. Shortly after opening, Oyster Bay was picked by Golf Digest as the #1 new public course in America. The success of these courses led to the golf explosion in the 1990’s.

Larry Young gave me my first break and rented me the tennis shack at Robbers Roost for my On The Green offices. He charged me almost nothing and it got me out of my bedroom office in my condo where I was a single Dad raising two boys. Larry became one of the first advertisers in my On The Green Magazine, and eventually he and his wife Judy became  wonderful friends. He later built Heather Glen for me in 1986.

While Larry was building his later courses we built Glen Dornoch. Then others built Ocean Ridge, Rivers Edge, Wild Wing Plantation, Man O’ War, Blackmoor, River Hills, World Tour, TPC, Wicked Stick, Pawleys Plantation, Caledonia, True Blue, Wachesaw Plantation East, Sandpiper, Arrowhead, The Pearl, Brunswick Plantation, Long Bay, Tidewater and many others.

Today, despite a few closings, the selection of Myrtle Beach golf courses is amazing. There is a golf package to fit everyone’s budget. You can contact any one of the Myrtle Beach golf packagers for information or go the Glens website to book golf. We also have a last minute tee times kiosk in the North Myrtle Beach Golf Dimensions store staffed with professionals to help you with your last-minute tee times.
