My Slice of Heaven
I’m Paul Himmelsbach. I’m 72 years old. And you might say that golf is my life.
I’ve been at the heart of Myrtle Beach golf for more than thirty years, and I’ve decided its time to share some of the many stories that I’ve been a part of over all of those decades.
I’m going to do that through this blog: Paul’s Slice of Life, and I hope you’ll find the stories entertaining with a bit of the inside scoop on Myrtle Beach golf.
My Myrtle Beach golf connection really began in 1977 when I launched On The Green Magazine, a golf magazine dedicated to covering the golf industry in Myrtle Beach. On the Green will be celebrating its 35th anniversary next year, something I am really proud of. In future blog posts, I’ll be sharing some of the publishing highlights from all those years.
I’ve also helped create some of the best golf courses in Myrtle Beach. Heather Glens, Glen Dornoch and Shaftsbury Glen are all courses that I will be telling you more about. Today they are all part of The Glens Golf Group, one of the finest collection of golf courses in the Myrtle Beach area.
Everything I do revolves around golf. Golf to me is about the passion of the game and the comradeship that comes along with it. I have lifetime golfing friends all over the world and a beautiful wife because of the game of golf. First and foremost a golf writer, I have been part of the Golf Writers Association Of America for forty years and am now a Life Member.
I have a house in golfing heaven – Ireland – where I spend the summers with my Irish friends playing the game I love. I belong to the beautiful Bantry Bay Club, which is “twinned” with Glen Dornoch, one of the best Myrtle Beach golf courses.
This year, I had the honor of being inducted into the Myrtle Beach Golf Hall of Fame, an elite body that includes many of the entrepreneurs responsible for making Myrtle Beach and its 100+ golf courses, the golf capital of the nation.
I wake up in the morning looking out at my own course, Shaftesbury Glen. I have a cup of java and immediately think about golf, my game – what to practice to improve it, and what to write about for my next article related to Myrtle Beach golf. I’ve got a lot more stories to share with you over the months and years to come.
Until then, I’ll close my first blog post by paraphrasing a baseball bit that ran on Saturday Night Live long ago: “golf been very, very good to me.”
